What Happened?
In late 2008, the recession and the economic slow-down hit nearly every
industry hard. The housing market crash sent a ripple effect that seemed more
like a tidal wave into nearly every facet of the economy. Widespread financial
panic caused a massive slow-down in spending among consumers, and by the early
part of 2009, businesses began to suffer under the squeeze.
Eventually, most companies were forced into buckling down, tightening their belts and
doing more with less. Different companies handled the situation differently,
making cuts in different areas. Some companies cut staff. Some cut budgets. Many
did both. Marketing and travel budgets - particularly those for events - took a
huge hit.
